After student got into the college, numerous pressure comes during their studies like academic failure, extensive homework, future uncertainty and even financial crisis.
Due to recent research done by American Psycological Association, such pressure without proper mental health counseling will lead to suicide and intent for hurting others or themselves.
Also, they pointed out that such incidents rises rapidly these years.
According to American College Health Association, more than 44 percent
of all college students claim they are experiencing stress more than average.
With COVID-19 spreads, the connection between college and students decreases as the pressure increases.
"The best way dealing with pressure in college is to use the mentoring resources, both academical and mental one,
while now there are too few students really use them."
43% of graduates strongly or somewhat agreed that they had a mentor who encouraged them
19% of graduates strongly disagreed that they had a helpful college mentor
A quarter of students indicated they never had used the resources of their institutions' career service office and never received career advice from either a faculty or staff member
After receiving the background data that illustrates the increasing pressure and the importance of mentoring, I conducted a research on finding the reason why students aren't willing to use the service. Also, I further researched what students expected from mentor the most and also if they are willing to be a mentor or mentee. Based on COVID limitations, I am only available to receive data from my University, University of Rochester and the methodologies I used for needfinding are survey and interview. Surveys are distributed through emails and social media platforms such as Facebook and Slack.
